New York By Design: Series 1
New York by Design is a TV Series all about New York innovation, ingenuity and design excellence.
It’s about inspiration, disruption and changing the game!
In March 2020, we realized we were unique in the world. We had the processes, relationships and technology to accelerate mass production of personal protective equipment (PPE) – specifically, face shields – very quickly.
So, we played to our strengths, adapted our business model, mobilized our network of world-class industrial engineers and suppliers across the U.S. and chose injection molding over 3D printing to accelerate mass production of personal protective equipment (PPE) and answer a call for help from frontline healthcare workers across the state and the country. ZVerse is now able to produce hundreds of thousands of face shields a day, all designed, sourced and made in the USA.

ZShield Flex Wins Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Award
The ZShield Flex face shield has been recognized by Fast Company as a 2020 Innovation by Design Award winner and recipient of an honorable mention in the Best Design of North America category. The ZVerse team is honored to be recognized with this coveted, national distinction, alongside world-renowned companies such as Microsoft, Google and Logitech.
Innovation by Design is the only competition to honor creative work at the intersection of design, business and innovation, and one of the most sought-after design awards in the industry. ZShields have disrupted traditional face shield design with their sleek, lightweight visors that clip around the wearer’s neck, making it comfortable for all-day wear. They’re a “Worker’s Dream!”
The ZShield Flex was the first neck-mount design shield developed by ZVerse.
“After launching with ZShield Health, we brought on Scott Henderson to reimagine the traditional face shield design and create a product that would be comfortable for a variety of work environments, as well as everyday life,” said ZVerse founder and CEO, John Carrington. “Going to market with such a novel design and seeing it in use by so many people and industries has been a humbling experience. We’re honored to be recognized by Fast Company for our work. It’s truly been a labor of love.”
Henderson, a renowned New York designer and ZVerse design partner, jumped at the chance to develop a new kind of face shield.
“When ZVerse originally contacted me about collaborating, I immediately realized how historic this moment was and felt an urgent need to help with the project,” said Henderson. “Prior to COVID-19, face shields weren’t considered an essential accessory outside of the healthcare and medical science industry. After a century of little innovation in regard to face shield design, I am so proud of our team for applying out-of-the-box critical thinking to create this new option for PPE.”
Our team tested more than a dozen face shield designs before landing on the final product: the ZShield Flex, a modern, reusable face shield made here in the U.S. In addition to its unique neck mount, the ZShield Flex has the ability to flip down for idle use, all without ever touching your face or masking your smile. The ultra-lightweight shield allows for all-day comfort and wear, ideal for long shifts and professions that require facial expressions, while shielding users from spray, splatter and the direct transfer of respiratory droplets.
Winners, finalists, and honorable mentions of Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards are featured online and in the October/November issue of Fast Company magazine. To see the complete list, go to: https://www.fastcompany.com/innovation-by-design/2020.

ZShields Go Hollywood: Celebrities and Beauty Pros Rock Hair and Makeup-Friendly Face Shields
Our ZShield face shields are making cameo appearances in makeup studios, hair salons, movie sets and other backstage Hollywood venues as personal protective equipment (PPE) for actors, actresses, influencers, cosmetologists and models helps get the entertainment industry back to work.
The ultra-lightweight neck mount is comfortable for all-day wear and leaves camera-ready hair untouched, while the plastic visor leaves hours worth of makeup unsmudged - all while providing a barrier that prevents the direct transfer of respiratory droplets.
Saved by the Bell, The West Wing and Blackish are just a few of the Hollywood hits sporting ZShields behind the scenes. Blackish stars Marcus Scribner and Tracee Ellis Ross don their shields offset.
The West Wing crew, including Rob Lowe, Allison Janney and Martin Sheen, showed up in ZShields for a special reunion show. Countless media outlets covered the show’s return to HBO, including The Daily Mail, and featured the stars in their ZShields.
Like many industries, the Coronavirus pandemic has taken a dramatic toll on the film business, with directors working hard to reimagine the filming process and getting creative in how, when and where they shoot. Naturally, PPE is part of the new COVID-19 protocol and ZShields are proving to be a great option for those off-camera moments.
Celebrity hair and makeup artists are also eagerly embracing ZShields as they return to work. Etienne Ortega, who works with Kris Jenner, Khloe Kardashian, Lana Del Rey and Christina Aguilera, and Ana Marshall (pictured left), whose clients include Natalie Portland and Paula Abdul, are just a few examples of beauty pros rocking the shield. Designed for all-day wear, ZShields fit comfortably around the neck like a necklace, allow for valuable facetime with clients and do not get in the way of haircuts, highlights, styling, etc.

McMaster highlights face shields in West Columbia visit to 3D manufacturing company
As hospitals, government agencies, service industry workers and consumers look for personal protective equipment, such as masks and gloves to protect themselves from catching or spreading the coronavirus, companies have looked to meet the demand.
In the last eight weeks ZVerse, a 3D manufacturing company with a packaging warehouse in West Columbia, has produced more than 3 million face shields that wrap from ear to ear to be used in health care settings.
ZVerse has now started making a new model of its transparent shield that can attach around a person’s neck that can be used in non-medical settings. The shield has less of a curve in front of the face, while also being able to flip-down in case someone wants to take a sip of water.
